History of UK Registrations

History of UK Registrations

UK vehicle registrations began in 1904 under the Motor Car Act, initially issued by local councils before the Department of Transport took over in 1974. Early plates used simple letter and number codes (e.g., A1), later expanding to three-letter and three-number formats. By the 1960s, the layout was reversed (999ABC), followed in 1963 by year suffixes (ABC123A) and from 1983 by year prefixes (A123ABC). The modern system, introduced in 2001, uses a regional and date code (e.g., AB51ABC) and is managed by the DVLA in Swansea.

How to fit replacement number plates

How to fit replacement number plates
**Removing the Old Number Plates:**
1. Lift off screw covers and remove screws, setting them aside.
2. If using adhesive, gently pull or pry the plate off. A wallpaper scraper can help, but be careful not to damage the surface.

**Fitting Screw-In Number Plates:**
We don't recommend drilling into the plate as it can cause the backing to come away from the acrylic face, and water can get in, but sometimes it's needed.
1. Drill holes in the new plates using the old plate as a template. Mark from the back for a neater appearance.
2. Create a catch mark for the drill and use an electric drill to make the holes. Avoid applying pressure to prevent damage.
3. Clean up the holes and screw the new plate in place, ensuring it’s secure but not over-tightened. Use new or old screws as needed.
4. If you have a color-matched cap, put it on.

**Fitting Adhesive Number Plates:**
1. Ensure the surface is flat, clean, and dry. Remove any old adhesive.
2. Stick adhesive pads to the back of the new plate, using more for a stronger fixing.
3. Remove the covers from the pads and align the plate before applying pressure, as the pads can't be reused. Make sure the surface and the plate are warm to activate the glue on the pads.
4. Press for about 10 seconds to secure it, and double-check its placement before driving.
Alternatively, you can fit number Plate surrounds that hold the Plate. See below.

Returns Policy

Made-to-Order Number Plates – Returns Policy

All number plates supplied by A1 Number Plates UK are made to order and manufactured specifically to the customer’s chosen registration, size, style and specification.

Returns & Cancellations

As our number plates are personalised and made specifically for each customer, we do not accept returns, exchanges or cancellations once production has started, unless the item is faulty or damaged.

Customers are responsible for checking that all information entered when ordering is correct, including the registration number, spacing, plate size, style and any additional options selected.

We cannot accept returns or provide replacements where incorrect information has been supplied by the customer.

Damaged or Faulty Plates

If your number plates arrive damaged or have a manufacturing fault, please contact us as soon as possible and provide photographs showing the issue.

Where we confirm that a plate is damaged or faulty, a replacement will be provided.

The damaged or faulty plate(s) must be returned to A1 Number Plates UK before a replacement is issued.

We will only replace the affected damaged or faulty plate(s). Plates cannot be returned simply because the customer has changed their mind, ordered the incorrect registration, selected the wrong size/style, or no longer requires them.

Nothing in this policy affects your statutory rights. Where goods are personalised or made to the customer's specifications, the usual change-of-mind cancellation rights may not apply. This does not affect your rights where goods are faulty, damaged, not as described, or otherwise do not conform to the contract.
